Retaining Block Wall Installation

Modular retaining walls are walls that hold back soil, even though the soil is at a higher angle than the wall, without needing mortar or cement to stay standing, also known as dry stacking. Much like how the pyramids were built without the use of cement, modern modular retaining walls use the strongest type of bond you can have between stone; stone lock. This bond is pretty self explanatory, as it really is the action of hooking stones together much like legos! This kind of block wall is not only extremely popular for landscapers in desert climates because it cuts out the need for grass lawns and diversified your home’s landscape! Not to mention that the less grass you have, the less money you have to spend on watering and trying to keep that grass alive in the scorching heat.

Besides picking your brick though, there is one more decision to make; the kind of bond that you would like your bricks to have. The bond is the way that you choose to have the bricks laid out and cemented into place. There are several different kinds of bonds you can have like, running bond, common bond, roman ⅓ bond, blemish bond, or dutch bond. Each bond looks different, and depends on what you personally would like your brick to look like, and what a professional mason would recommend you do depending on what kind of brick you choose to do.

Brickwork, or masonry as it’s known my is professionals, is one of the most classic components of American homes. Let’s get right into it!

Cinder Block Wall and Keystone Blocks

Keystone blocks are what make arches possible. Keystone blocks, or capstone blocks, are the most important stones used in an arch. Because you’re forming a rounded shape when you build an arch, you’re working against gravity and physics to keep the stone standing without something to distribute the weight of both of the sides of the arches evenly. That’s where the keystone block comes into play. The keystone block gives something for both sides of the arch to balance on, while distributing the weight evenly to the ground. Without the capstone, the arch is unstable and will eventually, if not immediately, collapse in on itself. These blocks are not only used to create beautiful arches that will enhance any landscaping project you have, but allow you to continue one of the most classic masonry traditions of all time.
In the simplest terms, brick masonry involves two materials: The bricks and mortar. There are a lot of different kinds of bricks available on the market today, but the two most popular are the following:
  • Burnt clay bricks are the most commonly used bricks on the market. These bricks are separated into four classes, contingent on the quality of brick. First class burnt clay bricks are the only bricks that are acceptable to be used on a home, because they are the only bricks that are deemed stable and strong enough to be used as materials in homes for your own safety.
  • Concrete bricks are the next type of brick option that you can use, although they don’t really look all that pretty. Often referred to as cinder blocks, this type of brick is usually used to frame buildings to make the structure more robust. These blocks are really cheap because they can be made on site with the same cement that you would use for your foundation! Cinder blocks are also used to build many kinds of decorative landscaping options like retaining walls and arches.

Masonry Contractors in Las Vegas, NV

Like most people in America, you take great pride in your landscaping around your home, and recently you’ve taken up the role as a DIY warrior on a mission to make your lawn and other landscaping fixtures look like new while adding a few little touches here and there. After browsing around the internet for awhile, you’ve decided you’ll put a small cinder block wall up around a flowerbed that you’ve decided to build. How hard can it really be? The youtube video that you watched made it look so simple, and it only took about a half an hour for them to build, so it really shouldn’t be all that hard. Well, after you invested an entire weekend into the not so simple task, the job is finally done! And it doesn’t look all that bad, other than there’s a little bit of the homemade mortar that you used to hold the cinder blocks together, on some of the bricks. All you need to do is clean that little bit off, and your yard has a little bit more character and charm to it! The steps to mortar removal are very simple. First make sure that the mortar is dried completely before you start to scrap it away, if it’s wet you’ll only find yourself in a bigger mess. Once the mortar is for sure dry you have two options. You can either go the old-fashioned route and use a chisel and hammer to slowly chip away the cement, or you can use a chemical called multric acid. Regardless of what you choose though, both methods work swimmingly, and you can be proud of your hardwork and ability as a self taught stone mason!
